Southwest Round-Up: Mid Season Hand Raising and Back Patting

We were right, we were wrong. That's kind of how our season previews have played out so far. We totally nailed it except in instances where we didn't. So here we are to accept your heartfelt congratulations for getting things right and to internalize your criticism when we whiffed.

Tony Levine

We were wrong Tony. So, so wrong.

We were wrong Tony. So, so wrong.

Let me raise my hand and say that we've mocked you for recruiting more out of state players than in state players, for your quick trigger on your offensive coordinator last  year, for losing to Texas State at home last season, and for that ridiculous wind breaker you wore in August last year. This year we thought you would continue to usher U of H down the crapper, we were wrong. You've got the Cougs 5-0 and looking like serious challengers in the AAC and you've done it with three quarterbacks and surprisingly solid defense.

We were wrong Tony, we will admit that.

Rice

Sitting pretty Owls, just like we thought.

Sitting pretty Owls, just like we thought.

Pat the Bud on the back for picking the Owls to win 9 or 10 back in August. Sure it hasn't been pretty, I mean that FAU game at home and the UTSA road win were both too close for comfort but here we are, right where we'd thought you'd be. Plus you beat Tulsa at Tulsa and now, your sitting pretty in the C-USA standings.

We nailed it no big whoop. Sometimes the game just comes to you and rim looks enormous.

Devonte Fields

You can't expect a man to play when he's suspended!

You can't expect a man to play when he's suspended!

We have to raise our hand and admit that Devonte Fields hasn't been the second coming of Lawrence Taylor or a poor man's Jadeveon Clowney. At this point he hasn't been the second coming of Devonte Fields. He's been a ghost thanks to suspensions and substandard play. Now he's out for 2013 with a foot injury and will seek a medical redshirt. So technically it was his foot and we weren't showed X-rays so how are we supposed to make predictions without a thorough medical exam?

Never mind, we were wrong. We don't make excuses in this family except for Uncle Albert. He can't help it, he's drunk.

Johnny Football

Out of the blue, Johnny Manziel is good at football.

Out of the blue, Johnny Manziel is good at football.

Ok, so this one wasn't rocket science but we said Johnny Manziel would be the best quarterback in the Round-Up and we were right, though Bryce Petty may have something to say about all this before we're done. Sure the Ags lost to Alabama but just take a gander to what Manziel did against the Tide compared to every other squad on 'Bama's schedule combined. Last week at Ole Miss Johnny was Johnny Clutch in the fourth quarter of a close game.

Yep, we went out on a limb and said the guy who was the Heisman Trophy winner in 2012 would be good at football again. BAM!

UT's Defense

So...we were wrong about that one.

So...we were wrong about that one.

EVERYONE WAS COMING BACK! EVERYONE! We said you guys had the best linebacker group in the Round-Up, the second best defensive line and defensive backs. Then you guys went to BYU. Manny Diaz is still there by the way. He's trying to thumb his way back. Last I heard he was pumping gas at an Indian Reservation Casino outside Tuscon. So we'll raise our hand and say we believed the hype.

I'm not saying we won't fall for it again. Just like not again this week.

Jace Amaro

Making that NFL money.

Making that NFL money.

We thought Kliff might be able to use a big target like you my man. We were right. You keep making yourself Jimmy Graham money every Saturday. And all this with two freshman quarterbacks throwing to you. 47 catches over 600 yards and we aren't even halfway through the season yet. Keep this up and Tech might pitch in an get you a full-time quarterback. Dare to dream Jace.

Derek Thompson

Thompson-for-blog.jpg

I raise my hand on Derek Thompson because we thought the big guy would lose his job in August and if he didn't he'd kill UNT's chances of being good at, you know, winning and stuff. We missed this one, big time. Thompson might be the most improved QB in the FBS He's raised his completion percentage 11 points from last year to a salty 68%. Now, let's ease up on the interceptions DT, it's still your Achilles heal, but you're on pace to crush your career highs in every statistical category.

Big ups Derek! Our hand is going up too.

So, there you go, full accountability from the Round-Up. The jury is still out on a few things, like Baylor and Tech's seasons, how far will UTEP sink, how far can UNT rise, how awkward can Mack make his ouster feel, etc. It will be an entertaining ride to the finish.
