12 members of Florida A&M's Marching 100 have been charged with manslaughter based on an alleged hazing incident on a bus. This story was the subject of a Real Sports report on HBO a few months back.
Apparently the ritual was that members would walk from the front of bus C to the back while being punched, kicked, and generally attacked by other band members. A sort of gauntlet and a "right of passage" for band members. 26 year old drum major Robert Champion attempted to walk the gauntlet of bus C. The ritual was carried out at night on a dark bus, a short time later, after passing out during the attack, Champion was dead from the injuries he sustained.
Apparently University officials were made aware of other hazing incidents before Champion was killed. The schools Dean and Police Chief both recommended the band be suspended because of these episodes. The band director dismissed the recommendations.
