Round-Up Recap: North Texas Goes 2-1 with Home Win Over Ball State

North Texas (2-1) 34

PASS: Wenning (BALL): 27-46, 333, 2 TD Thompson (UNT): 31-47, 274, TD

We all owe Derek Thompson an apology. We had him losing his starting job in the spring, and then losing it in fall camp. Then we thought if he played he’d be a spare. Again. We were wrong Derek. We believe in you now. Until next week, then all bets are off. Thompson brought UNT back from 18 down in the second quarter to perhaps a season saving win.

Whatever you do, don’t watch the last two minutes of this one. I counted four false starts, two each by the Mean Green and the Cardinals. That aside, UNT is showing great improvement. Ball State turned it over five times, but the Mean Green took advantage. Something they struggled to do last year and last week against Ohio.

UNT kicker Zach Paul contributed four field goals the defense got stingy in the second half. For his part Thompson was 31-47 for 247 with 70 yards rushing. Not quite Manzielian but pretty good for a guy left for dead after last year.

UNT travels to Georgia next week for a stern test against the Bulldogs.

Fun to hear Jub Jub Dunham on the call for UNT in these highlights.
