Round-Up Recap: TCU Takes the Skillet, Promptly Beats SMU To A Pulp With It

SMU (1-3) 17

TCU (2-2) 48

PASS: Gilbert (SMU): 23-44, 276, 2 TD Boykin (TCU): 15-26, 228, 2 TD

RUSH: Nlemchi (SMU): 10-46 James (TCU): 11-54, TD

REC: Johnson (SMU): 11-159, TD Slanina (TCU): 3-63, TD

SMU hung around for half then, in the third quarter, they watched it all fall apart thanks to turnovers, offensive ineptitude, and a better TCU team.

TCU was the beneficiary of SMU's gifts in the second half and outscored the Mustangs 41-7 in the second half. Trevone Boykin played a sub-par first half, followed by an excellent second half, including 5 straight drives ending in points.

When is it time to pull the plug on Garrett Gilbert? Gilbert's four picks were a death nail for the Mustangs. Is SMU going to go anywhere this season with or without Gilbert? After a season plus and no discernable improvement it may well be time to see what the young quarterbacks on the roster can do.

As for TCU, this may be a sad cautionary tale regarding Devonte Fields. Fields was an all-everything defensive end last season, then suspended for the first two games this year, ineffective last week, and out this week with an unidentified injury. Here's hoping this is just a blip and Fields can get back on the field. TCU goes to OU for what looks like a loss, while SMU gets Rutgers at home, which looks a lot like a loss.
