Work has begun on new improvements to the west grandstand of Bowers Stadium.

Several rows will be replaced with a seating area that is more compliant with American Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. Other improvements to the West side include the installation of hand rails on the steps in the aisles in the Orange chair back seating section.

Finally to accommodate the demand for more premium seating at Bowers Stadium, new chair back seating will be added to other sections as well.

“Our season ticket holders are very important to us here at Sam Houston,” Bearkat director of athletics Bobby Williams said. “The improvements to accommodate ticket holders that fall within the ADA guideline, the new hand rails in the aisles for chair back customers plus the opportunity to expand our base of chair back season ticket customers will make the football experience at Bowers even better.”

Houston Baptist University has received a $3 million gift from Robert and Janice McNair to support the construction of the Huskies' new on-campus football stadium.

"Janice and I believe HBU is one of the leading universities in Christian higher education; we also recognize the values of football and as such, see this as a worthwhile contribution to continue that excellence," Robert McNair said. "As we've seen with the Texans, the sport of football provides a rallying point for the whole community. We see that same dynamic taking shape at HBU, and we are proud to be part of it."

HBU's playing surface, Dunham Field, as well as the buildings that comprise the HBU Football Complex, were installed during the summer of 2013. Construction on the stadium's seating, ticketing and press box areas is scheduled to begin later this month, and the McNairs' gift will aid in the completion of those projects.

The Huskies expect to open the 2014 campaign, their first official season as an NCAA Division I FCS competitor, at home against McMurry on Sept. 6 at the new stadium, which has yet to be officially named.
