What We Saw: SMU 55 East Carolina 31

SMU rebounded from a blow out home loss to Memphis but blowing out the East Carolina Pirates on the road. SMU is one win from a bowl game and more competitive in the AAC than ever.

Here's what we saw:

  1. Ben Hicks was good. Hicks completed 60% of his passes for the first time in his SMU career and connected for three touchdowns and no picks. A big step in his development for the Mustangs. His TD to Int ratio gets back in the positive and he looked more comfortable.
  2. The rushing game was great. Ke'Mon Freeman and Braeden West each rushed for 100 yards at over five yards a clip. SMU had their highest rushing total since the opener against North Texas.
  3. Courtland Sutton was AWESOME. Sutton is a next level player and he showed it again today, 12 catches 166 yards and two touchdowns. His catches and yards were career high. Sutton's size and speed make him a matchup problem for almost anyone. If Hicks continues to develop that's nothing but good news for Sutton.

SMU welcomes USF to the Hilltop on Saturday.
