What We Saw: UTEP 52 North Texas 24

In a season of bizarre UTEP results, of course the Miners ended the season with another head scratcher. At least this time the Miners were on the right side of one. UNT on the other hand left their best stuff in Denton and it may cost the Mean Green a bowl game.

Here's what we saw...

The Once and Future King...

Aaron Jones, ladies and gentlemen, is special. Someday UTEP fans will kick themselves when they realize they stayed away in droves as the greatest runner in school history was slicing and dicing his way through CUSA. The junior has bounced back from last years injury and evidenced his comeback with a 24 carry 301 yard, four touchdown performance against UNT. He's a special back and Saturday helped cement it.

It's a long season...

Going back to August we picked the Mean Green to win all of 2 games. If they were lucky. Mass defections and a new staff with new schemes made 2016 appear to be an uphill climb. But Seth Littrell exceeded everyone's expectations except his own in coming within a win of automatic bowl eligibility. In the end, attrition took its toll and playing with a bevy of backups the Mean Green ran out of steam but the future is bright in Denton.

So what now?

UTEP ends 2016 with a much sweeter taste in their mouth, but it was still a bitter season. Quarterback inefficiency, injuries, heartbreaking losses, and blowouts. The roller coaster didn't have many ups and a lot of downs. We'll see what the future holds for Sean Kugler and his staff as well as Aaron Jones and the NFL.

For UNT, the Mean Green can still qualify for a bowl thanks to their APR ranking, a huge step for Seth Littrell and his staff. They may even get Mason Fine back for a bowl game and the real benefit is the extra practices. If Littrell can keep his staff together and bring in a few more players, the future is bright in Denton.

More Miners and Mean Green...
