Around the State: Sam Houston Opens FCS Playoffs vs. Chattanooga

Following a first round bye, the Sam Houston State Bearkats host the Chattanooga Mocs at Bowers Stadium on Saturday in the 2nd round of the FCS playoffs. The Bearkats are ranked number 1 in the FCS.

Sam Houston are led by Jeremiah Briscoe at quarterback, a UAB transfer who set the Southland Single Season Touchdown mark with 52 this year, surpassing a mark that's stood for almost 30 years. Briscoe is within four touchdowns of the all time FCS mark. K.C. Keeler who replaced Willie Fritz three years ago after a three year run in which Fritz led the Kats to three straight championship game appearances, has taken up where Fritz left off. The Bearkats have made the semifinals of the playoff the first two years of his tenure and he's 33-9 in his three year run. This year's team, which is undefeated, is considered his best so far in Huntsville.

Chattanooga beat Weber State last week to advance to play SHSU. Sam Houston, with a win, would move on to play the winner of James Madison and New Hampshire.
