UIL State Championship Attendance Up from 2015
Total attendance for the Class A six-man through Class 6A games played Wednesday through Saturday at AT&T Stadium was 245,913. Last year's total was 162,291 for the 12 state finals.
The DeSoto-Cibolo Steele Class 6A Division II final Saturday drew the biggest crowd of the week at 40,318. It was the only game with a smaller attendance than a year ago.
This is the first season that all 12 state finals, from Class A six-man to Class 6A, were played at the same site and on the same weekend. The better the attendance, the more money the UIL makes. It gets 16 percent of the revenue from the gate from every playoff game. The UIL will look "at every venue" when it comes time to negotiate a new contract. That means AT&T Stadium, NRG Stadium and the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Bev Kearney Alleges Major Applewhite Affair more serious than Texas Admits
In a brief filed Monday to the Texas Supreme Court, Bev Kearney’s attorney alleges the circumstances involving Major Applewhite’s January 2009 encounter with a student trainer are “much more serious” than the University of Texas claims.
Kearney, UT’s former track coach, is suing the university on race and gender discrimination. The brief was filed the same day Applewhite was introduced as the new coach at the University of Houston.
Kearney was engaged in a long romantic relationship with a former athlete and claims she was treated differently than Applewhite, who UT has said had an inappropriate relationship with a graduate student trainer prior to the 2009 Fiesta Bowl. Kearney resigned under pressure. Applewhite was reprimanded, but not fired, and later promoted and given pay raises.
In a request to add additional evidence, “Kearney would likely be able to plead additional facts showing that the circumstances surrounding Applewhite’s affair are not as the University claims, and were much more serious than those surrounding Kearney’s entirely consensual relationship with a student ten years prior to her termination.”
UT asked the Texas Supreme Court to block the case. Two lower courts have allowed the case to proceed.
Todd Orlando joins Tom Herman in Austin
Tom Herman made his defensive coordinator hire official on Monday, bringing in his former Houston assistant Todd Orlando. Orlando oversaw a Houston defense that rose from 53rd to 14th in total defense in two seasons at Houston. Herman also hired safeties coach Craig Naivar from Houston and strength coach Yancy McKnight.
Rumor has it Orlando will make more than $1 million per season, making him the highest-paid assistant in UT history and joining at least 12 other college football assistants making seven-figure salaries.
