Rice Hires Scott Vestal to Coach Safeties

Rice completed its defensive staff by bringing in Scott Vestal to coach safeties for the Owls. Vestal was a defensive assistant at Maryland last season. Prior to that he coached the secondary at Kansas under Charlie Weiss and was also titled the Director of Football Operations. Directing football operations under Charlies Weiss at Kansas is probably something you'd want to scrub from your resume.

Vestal has coached on the defensive side of the ball at Florida, Texas, Louisiana Tech, SMU and North Texas. Looks like most of those roles were in the analyst/quality control/graduate assistant capacity. Vestal played high school football at Arlington Lamar and received his degree from Texas A&M.

In other Rice news Brian Stewart will coach corners as well as hold down his defensive coordinator responsibilities. Stewart replaced longtime Rice assistant Chris Thurmond.
