We're just over halfway through the season, and it's probably a good time to take a look at how the Miners have fared through seven games.
The Road so far
Raise your hand if you've seen a UTEP Miner football win this season. Keep those hands down. Yep. The Miners are 0-7. One of three winless teams left in college football. They aren't just 0-7, they fired their offensive coordinator, then they fired their head coach, replaced him with an elderly former coach, and they've been outscored by an average of 37 to 12. It's an unmitigated disaster.
The Road Ahead
The Miners welcome UTSA at home, coming off a bye week. It's now or never for UTEP. The Miners go on the road for three of their last four to finish the season, at Middle Tennessee, at North Texas, home to Louisiana Tech, and at UAB. Wins will be hard to come by.
UTEP is in the midst of hiring an athletic director to take the program in a better direction. His or her first job will be finding a football coach to take the football program somewhere its never been, consistently winning.
Can't fill those shoes
Sean Kugler tried to build UTEP in a ground and pound war machine. The Miners featured Aaron Jones last season; he's now plying his craft in Green Bay. Last year the Miners averaged almost six yards a carry, this season UTEP's rushing game put up three "worst in a decade" yardage games in 2017. The Miners don't have the passing acumen to overcome their lack of a running game.
Quadraiz Wadley gave UTEP a jolt when he returned, but in their last outing against Southern Miss, the Miners reverted back their poor rushing habits. Neither Kevin Dove nor Walter Dawn gave the Miners any consistent run game.
First Half MVP
Alvin Jones is once again a bright light in El Paso. The senior leads the Miners in tackles, sacks, tackles for loss, QB hurries, and forced fumbles. Jones' stellar career is ending with another excellent season. By the time he's done Jones will rewrite the Miner defensive record book as well.
UTEP is last in the NCAA in field goals made (1) and second to last in field goals attempted (4).
