Give it to Dana Dimel; he's putting together a good staff at UTEP. We would assume that most of the names here actually show up in El Paso, but the one constant in college coaching is change. We also suspect that to put together this staff, UTEP may have increased its assistant coach salary pool.
Let's take a look:
Mike Canales, Offensive Coordinator: Canales comes to UTEP from Tennessee. He knows the state well having spent a lot of time at North Texas. Generally speaking, he's been an above average play caller, until the wheels fell off at the end of the McCarney era.
Reggie Mitchell, Running Backs: Mitchell overlapped with new DC Mike Cox on John L. Smith's Michigan State staff. He comes to UTEP from Arkansas where he coached with Bret Bielema from 2016 to last season. He coached for five seasons at Kansas under Turner Gil and Charlie Weiss. He also held the position of recruiting coordinator while in Lawrence. Before that he coached on Ron Zook's Illinois staff, coaching running backs and assistant head coach.
Scotty Ohara, Receivers: Ohara coached with Dimel at Arizona and followed him to Kansas State. He coached running backs and tight ends at K-State as well as a quality control staffer. He comes to El Paso from Rutgers where he worked in offensive quality control. Read more about Ohara and his connection to Jerry Kill here.
Jake Waters, Inside Receivers: Fans might remember Waters from his time quarterbacking K-State with Dimel as the offensive coordinator. After his playing days, he coached at Iowa Western CC before taking a GA position at Iowa State.
Mike Cox, Defensive Coordinator: Cox left K-State's staff abruptly last spring, wanting to spend more time with his family. Apparently, he's had enough of his family and is ready to jump back in. Cox coached at the University of Washington after a stint with the St. Louis Rams in from 2007-2008. Before that he was tied to John L. "Is Your Piss Hot?" Smith's staff at Michigan State, Louisville, Utah State, and Idaho. From 2012 to the spring of 2017 he coached with Dimel on Bill Snyder's staff.
Mike Tuiasosopo, Defensive Line: Tuiasosopo coached at UCLA under Jim Mora from 2014 to this season. Before that he coached D-Line at Colorado and Arizona on Mike Stoops' staff. He coached with Dimel there. He overlapped on a John L. Smith staff with Cox at Utah State in the late 90's. He's also coached at Nevada and on Urban Meyer's Utah staff.
Joe Robinson, Special Teams: Abilene native and former Texas Tech special teams coach Joe Robinson will coach specialists under Dimel. The two coached together at Houston. Before Tech, Robinson coached at South Carolina and LSU. He also coached on Mike Stoops' Arizona staff, where he coached with Dimel, as well as on staffs at Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, and Central Florida. Kingsbury let him go from Tech in early December after one of the worst kicking seasons in the FBS, due in part to an injury to Clayton Hatfield.
Dimel still needs a O-line coach, a defensive backs coach, and one other to make ten, whether that you add a second coach in the defensive backfield or divide up the defensive front, we'll see.
He's off to a pretty good start and his staff is beating the bushes recruiting right now.
