With Arizona State sniffing around, Tech locked up defensive coordinator David Gibbs with a raise.
Gibbs is incrementally improving Tech's defensive unit, raising its total defense ranking from 128th in 2016 to 100 in 2017. Given Tech's recent defensive history, 100th is in the same realm as water to wine. Tech improved by giving up twelve fewer points a game this year as opposed to 2016.
Once Phil Bennett resigned his defensive coordinator position at Arizona State, several sources linked Gibbs to the opening. Tech never let that alternative get too far down the road. Surely Gibbs looked at the dumpster fire in waiting that is Tempe and knew the better spot was Lubbock.
The raise reportedly puts Gibbs base salary at $750,000 per year, not quite Todd Orlando money, but a nice bump.
