Happy Birthday to Rod Jones, SMU and NFL Great

Happy 53rd Birthday to a Southwest Conference Great, former South Oak Cliff Bear, SMU Mustang and NFL alum Rod Jones.

Jones graduated from South Oak Cliff in '82 and headed just west to the Hilltop to play for the Mustangs. A corner for the Mustangs, Jones was known for his physical play, twice winning the team's Big Hit Award.

At this point we have to point out that Jones was implicated in SMU's payment of players scandal that led to the Mustangs receiving the Death Penalty. He was one of many to receive extra benefits, not just at SMU but around the conference at that time.

Off the football field, Jones was a two-time member of the Mustangs national champion 1,600 meter relay team and garnered All-American honors in the 400 meters.

Jones was a first round pick of the Buccaneers in 1986. Jones went on to a 11 year career, playing for both the Bucs and the Bengals. Jones is best known for running down Bo Jackson at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1990 as a member of the Bengals.

Happy Birthday to a hard hittin' speedster and SMU legend, Rod Jones.
