Arkansas transfer Rafe Peavey put himself squarely in the mix for the starting nod with a 16-18 173 yard performance in SMU's spring game. Peavey also completed two touchdown passes including the "game winner," a 58 yarder to tightend Corey Rau in the final minutes.
Peavey is attempting to unseat incumbent starter Ben Hicks who was inconsistent in 2016 but finished the season with three strong performances. Hicks was 11-17 for 114 yards and a score yesterday.
Afterwards Morris still gave the starting edge to Hicks but conceded that Peavey had made up ground. Highly touted JC transfer D.J. Gillins was held out of spring ball recovering from a knee injury but he may add himself to the mix as well.
SMU's quarterback position should be in better shape and deeper than last season when Hicks was pressed into duty after an injury to Matt Davis in week one.
