For the first time this offseason someone is heading to Lubbock rather than leaving it. After Jonathan Giles and Tony Brown both transferred in the last month, the Red Raiders added grad transfer running back Derrick Mitchell Jr. from Iowa.
Mitchell, originally from St. Louis, went to Iowa as a receiver but move to running back during the 2015 offseason. He's a bigger back at 6-1, 220 pounds and had fourteen career carries for 174 yards during his Hawkeye careers. Mitchell had two carries in 2016.
Mitchell will be part of a running back corp that was banged up this spring with Justin Stockton recovering from concussion related symptoms and Da'Leon Ward dealing with a bone bruise.
