Gear Head is in the middle of a new series that all AD's, assistant AD's, designers, shoe companies, and athletes around the nation will want to take note of, we're picking the best uniform for each of our beloved Round-Up schools. Maybe a few others. We don't know. We've got a pretty full Saturday planned.
The "Best Look" if you will.
We aren't restricting ourselves to any specific decade, though sifting through the black and white stuff will drive you crazy.
In short, the best look is the look that the Round-Up schools should return to and stick with full time, not just some one-off throwback game, but all the time from here to eternity. Shoe companies be damned.
This week, North Texas. Working title: Everyone's going green.
First a bit of history...
Lots of Positives
North Texas has three things going for it. 1) Kelly green is a beautiful, underutilized color. 2) They have several great logos. 3)They are a Nike school so they don't run into any danger of any of the following atrocities:
While we're on the subject of logos. (Well, we weren't but moving on.) The Mean Green have some pretty kick ass logos. Feast your eyes.
So we know Nike makes good looking uniforms without barbed wire watermarks. The kelly green is a great color and they have logos to pull from. Oh, an they've never lost their minds with their uniform designs like say...
Keep it Simple
So let's look at what we have to work with. First of all, stick with the kelly green. So this helmet works. It's a great logo, the color is right on, and the classic white looks great. It's also a look that North Texas used a lot in 2016, more than even the green helmet. The green helmet with the white facemask looks really good as well.
Now lets add the gorgeous throwbacks from 2013, they harken back to the Mean Joe Green era. Match the green up with the helmet green for continuity. Keep the pant stripes or go with the Northwestern stripe on the pants as well. That look would be one of the cleanest in the country.
Yes we know we're getting close to the old Texas State Armadillos, but hey if it's good enough for Paul Blake and Lucy Draper, it should be good enough for the Mean Green.
Don't get hung up on the cultural insensitivity of the a bad 90's sports movie. Remember Hayden Fry wanted to call North Texas "Texas State" back in the early 70's. It's as though Scott Bakula is the harbinger of North Texas' classic look these many years later.
About the Chrome
You can use the chromed out silvers, which we shockingly like, on special occasions. That'll keep the 17 year olds happy. Plus they look pretty good with the green, one of the few - oh so few- chrome domes that actually look good.
