Shortly after posting this story, we learned that the CFL has since come in a put a halt to Hamilton's plans to hire Art Briles. Good for Canada. Now if Liberty and FAU would just come to their senses.
Proving that the cost of creating a culture that brazenly interfered with the rights of women and personally obstructing justice is roughly fifteen months, Art Briles went and got himself a job today with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. For those of you scoring at home, former Baylor AD Ian McCaw is personally chaperoning Liberty University in the FBS, Art's kid Kendal caught on with Lane Kiffin's outlaw outfit at FAU, and somewhere Ken Starr is wondering around tone deaf.
Never forget it Briles, legendary leader of men, after a player was arrested for assault and threatening to kill a non-athlete, texted Athletics Director Ian McCaw: “Just talked to [the player] – he said Waco PD was there – said they were going to keep it quiet – Wasn’t a set up deal… I’ll get shill (Shillinglaw) to ck on Sibley (local attorney Jonathan Sibley).”
McCaw's response? “That would be great if they kept it quiet!”
When authorities caught a freshman player with alcohol, Briles texted that he hoped the player's name wouldn't raise any scrutiny and that he'd was trying to "keep him away from our Judicial Affairs folks." Baylor's Judicial Affairs office has oversight for all records and information related to student conduct violations not related to the Honor Code, i.e., criminal conduct. Criminal conduct like, oh, I don't know, brandishing a gun at a female student. Something that happened in 2013, but that Briles insured never got reported to Judicial Affairs. There was at least one five-player gang rape the university claimed Briles knew about and didn’t report. Briles regime repeatedly worked to keeps Baylor players from facing University or criminal scrutiny. He was too busy winning football games.
Kendal Briles was famous for his recruiting pitch, “Do you like white women? Because we have a lot of them at BAYLOR and they LOVE football players.” Stay classy Kendal.
So to keep score, McCaw got a job at another private Christian University, Kendal Briles is working at the FBS version of "Last Chance U, " and now Art Briles is coaching in Canada.
The Tiger-Cats hired Briles as an Offensive Assistant; a move met with questioning by the CFL league office. Apparently, several sponsors are questioning the hiring as well. New Tiger-Cats head coach June Jones made the hire with ownership's blessing. Jones, now infamous for growing tired of recruiting while at SMU, so much so that he just quit doing it, will address the hiring at a press conference tomorrow (Tuesday).
Hamilton CEO Scott Mitchell told the Hamilton Spectator that Briles was “a good man caught in a very bad situation” and that “people deserve second chances.” The phrase "caught in a very bad situation" is intriguing. If you construct the situation can you get "caught" in it?
By the way, Hamilton is hosting a "Huddles and Heels" event tonight to teach ladies about football while they sip wine, assumedly in heels. No word on how Briles' hiring will affect attendance. We hope women and CFL fans speak by taking their heels and other shoe accessories elsewhere.
