No real surprise here, unless the surprise was it taking this long, but Seth Littrell named Mason Fine the starter for the opener vs. Lamar. Fine, a sophomore from Locust Grove, Oklahoma beat out Quinn Shanbour. Fine surprised most people with his play as a true freshman last season, though he missed the last four games due to a shoulder injury.
Shanbour emerged as a contender in spring ball and made the competition a two-horse race. Fine reasserted himself in the fall as the best quarterback on campus. Expect both to play Saturday against FCS Lamar. The Cardinals, out of Beaumont, are dealing with Tropical Storm Harvey and its turn east towards the Louisiana border. The game is still on the schedule and expected to go on this weekend.
We expect a big season out of Fine as he makes the transition into year two in Graham Harrell's offense. The Mean Green also field an improved receiving group this year led by Rico Bussey, Jalen Guyton, and Turner Smiley. Fine also has the benefit of Jeffery Wilson at running back.
