If Jerry West is the logo of the NBA, the Zach Thomas is the logo for Texas Tech. Thomas played for the Pampa Harvesters in high school before attending Texas Tech. As under recruited as any potential NFL Hall of Famer could be, the under-tall Thomas became a three-year starter for the Red Raiders and two-time defensive player of the year in the the Southwest Conference. Thomas and his brother Bart were the only pair of brothers to be named first-team All-Southwest Conference selections in the same year.
Thomas made the 1995 All-American team, good enough to be drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round. Thomas played thirteen years in the league with the Dolphins and Cowboys. He went to seven Pro-Bowls and named All-NFL five times. Thomas currently ranks sixth all-time in tackles in the NFL.
Back to his time at Tech, Thomas' pick six against Texas A&M in 1995 is one of the most iconic plays in both SWC and Texas Tech history.
Tech inducted Thomas into the Hall of Fame in 2015.
Happy Birthday to a SWC great, Zach Thomas!
