A&M loses Starkel and Wilson for a Significant Portion of the Season

As if blowing a 34 point lead in the final 18 minutes isn't bad enough, A&M received word today that starting quarterback Nick Starkel and starting safety Donovan Wilson. Starkel fractured his ankle, and Wilson injured his foot. Both underwent surgery today.

Kevin Sumlin was vague on their return, just saying they be out for a while. It's hard to imagine Starkel is returns this year. Wilson's injury is a little less clear, but he'll miss a lot of time.

In the mean time, A&M will make do with either Kellen Mond who finished Sunday's game 3 for 17 and senior Jake Hubenak. Or the Aggies could petition to see if Johnny Manziel has any eligibility yet.

Replacing Wilson won't be any less important, but will be easier. The Aggies have a slew of young safeties; you saw most of them dropping interceptions on Sunday. However, none bring Wilson's savvy or physicality.

A&M plays Nichols State Saturday at Kyle Field.
