Former Kansas linebacker Kevin Kane will be coordinating Sonny Dykes' defense on the Hilltop next year. Kane spent this past two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois. Prior to that Kane spent a year at his alma mater coaching linebackers. Before that Kane was on Dave Doeren's UNI staff, coaching linebackers and special teams.
At UNI Kane ran a hybrid 4-3 with three down linemen and a standup defensive end. The defense thrives on pressure and using angles and alignment to take advantage of speed against size. Last season the Huskies finished the season ranked 32nd in total defense, a 47 spot jump over 2016. Kane is considered a fast riser; he was a candidate for a number of P5 coordinator positions earlier in the offseason.
Kane takes over an SMU defense that struggled to stop anyone last season under DC Van Malone. The Mustangs finished 2017 ranked 122nd out of 130 FBS programs. SMU gave up 476 yards and 36.7 points per game.
