Just as grad transfers leave Rice, coaches are coming on board for Mike Bloomgren's inaugural staff. Maybe they can high five on their way in and out. The big addition is that Pete Lembo is heading to Rice from Maryland according to Bruce Feldman.
Lembo is the former head coach at Lehigh, Elon, and Ball State. Limbo left Ball State to take over as special teams coach at Maryland. Lembo's career record as a head coach is 112-65, and he's widely respected in coaching circles. He'll coach special teams and assume the role of Assistant Head Coach.
Bloomgren also announced two former Stanford assistants as well as Joe Ashfield and Robbie Picazo. Ashfield will coach the offensive line, and Picazo will handle the quarterbacks.
Ashfield played quarterback for the legendary John Gagliardi at St. John's (Minn). Austin Murphy chronicled a season with Gagliardi who's unorthodox coaching methods were matched only by his success. It's a great read.
Ashfield is a bit of a traveler as well having played in Germany and coached in New Zealand as well as Delta State, New Mexico Military.
Picazo played at Stanford and became a GA there upon graduation.
