The hits keep coming, directly to the groin for Rice. The Great Glynn Hill delivered the bad news via Twitter today.
RB Sam Stewart and DB Christian Bertrand have been medically disqualified & won't return to the field although they'll be around team. WR Parker Smith has opted to focus on his masters in accounting. Bloomgren confirms that WR Kylen Granson decided to transfer (back in December). https://t.co/v4MvyJw2Ll— Glynn Hill (@RiceChron) March 20, 2018
Running back Samuel Stewart and defensive back Christian Bertrand are both medically disqualified from playing at Rice. Stewart's injury issues go back to his high school career at Cy Woods. Bertrand might be the most physical returning defensive player for the Owls.
Receiver Parker Smith will retire as well to pursue his Masters.
Mike Bloomgren confirmed that Kylen Granson is transferring out of the program. The sophomore receiver was one of the best athletes with size at the position.
At quarterback the situation is getting pretty dire, Miklo Smalls is not participating in spring drills due to personal reasons. Smalls looked to be the odds-on favorite to start in 2018. Last year's opening day starter, Sam Glaesmann, is out with a shoulder injury and part-time starter Jackson Tyner is throwing for the Rice Baseball team. The attrition and absences leave the door open for Shawn Stankavage and two walk-ons, Evan Marshman and Robbie Blosser to get reps this spring.
If Smalls isn't back for summer or fall camp, Rice will be in a very interesting position at quarterback, and some first-year players might get a real shot play.
