Camp Update August 11

The Mean Green went through a controlled scrimmage on Saturday. Mason Fine picked up where he left off in 2017 with four touchdowns, including one to Jalen Guyton. On defene E.J. Ejiya continues to flash the chaos inducing plays that could make him a difference make yet again in 2018.

Perhaps the biggest news was that Arkansas transfer kicker Cole Hedlund connected on seven of his eight field goal attempts.

Rice went through their second scrimmage, this time in Rice Stadium on Saturday. Mike Bloomgren was pleased with his first team offense and their ability to move the ball. Once the staff made substitutions, that efficiency wained. Bloomgren expects to set his depth chart heading into next week as the Owls transition into game prep ahead of Prairie View on August 25th and the rest of the Owl's schedule.

On the quarterback front, Jackson Tyner, out-performed Shawn Stankavage on Saturday, but the two have both had good days this week.

The news in Texas came from off the field after a report circulated that head coach Tom Herman was the source of columnist Brett McMurphy's initial knowledge regarding the situation at Ohio State involving Urban Meyer and Zach Smith. Herman and Texas denied the report, while acknowledging that Herman helped Smith's wife financially during a period of the alleged abuse. An Ohio media personality, Jeff Snook, claimed Herman gave information to McMurphy in retaliation for Meyer poaching a five-star recruit out from under Herman's nose. McMurphy denied Snook was the source of the report as well.

The other news came from College Park, where the University of Maryland placed head coach D.J. Durkin on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the death of Terrapin player Jordan McNair in May during a team conditioning exercise.

Texas opens the season against Maryland in Washington D.C.

Keff Ciardello, a must follow for Texas State fans, reports that true freshman Kylar Cooks is starting at left tackle for the 'Cats. Last season true freshman Nic Foster made starts at left tackle, however he's in concussion protocol and may not play in 2018. Cooks at 6-5, 270 pounds comes from northeast Texas powerhouse Liberty-Eylau.

In the Bobcat's Saturday scrimmage, Kordell Rodgers and Dennis Johnson Jr. played with the first team at cornerback as Jashon Waddy transitions to safety.

Texas Tech went through a closed scrimmage yesterday and Jone AT&T Stadium. Twitter was aflutter with news that Octavious Morgan went down with some form of injury. Kliff Kingsbury will address the matter on Monday during his media availability. Morgan started five games at safety last season.

The Red Raiders are off on Sunday.

UTEP wrapped up the Ruidoso portion of its fall camp with a morning scrimmage, then packed up and headed back to El Paso. Kai Locksley ran the first team offense and had his moments. Dana Dimel seems very comfortable with his defensive line. The unit played sparingly in yesterday's festivities to prevent any injuries.

The Miner defense played well and Oregon transfer A.J. Hotchkins looks like a real contributor.
