Camp Updates August 14

The battle for backup quarterback at SMU is down to two players who've never taken a collegiate snap Austin Upshaw and William Brown. Currently the two are splitting reps with the second unit. Even before Rafe Peavey transferred to Florida Atlantic and D.J. Gillins, left for UTSA, the position was wide open. Upshaw is a redshirt from LaPorte and Brown is a freshman from Lamar Consolidated.

There's nothing holding Cal transfer Tre Watson back. The running back is cleared for contact for the first time in fall camp. Watson's been participating in drills, but due to his right knee, has worn a green no contract jersey. Strength tests revealed that his right knee is as strong as his left yesterday and he's cleared to compete for the starting job along with Daniel YoungKyle Porter, and everyone else.

All-SEC center Erik McCoy is back, working at center after playing at guard during parts of camp. Jimbo Fisher's thought is that lineman are interchangeable and injuries dictate who'll play where as much as anything else.

Fisher was encouraged by the way his quarterbacks communicated and got the team in and out of huddles and plays well. The scrimmage was more physical than anything he saw in the spring.

Kliff Kingsbury like his team energy in this weekend's scrimmage, but he'd like to see his team play cleaner as penalties were too prevalent. The 2018 Tech squad is the deepest in Kingsbury's tenure. He felt that the second team is as competitive as its been.

He doesn't have any new report on Octavius Morgan, though he did note that it is a leg injury and an MRI will dictate how long he's out.

At quarterback Tech is still looking at three quarterbacks in the mix with Jett DuffeyMcLane Carter, and Alan Bowman. Right now the decision would be a "coin flip" as to who starts.

UTSA's quarterback situation is still even. Frank Wilson isn't planning on alternating quarterbacks and expects to determine a starter through the course of camp. He does say he's got three viable options with Bryce RiversCordale Grundy, and D.J. Gillins. But he did note that none have taken meaningful snaps over the course of a season.
