For the first few days of practice, Matt Rhule is holding two practices, one for the veterans and another for the newcomers and less experienced players. Rhule likes to split the units up to start fall camp to give young players more reps and one on one coaching.
Redshirt freshman defensive end Justin Harris announced on Twitter that he is transferring out of Baylor. Rhule announced before the start of spring drills that Harris had been suspended from the team due to undisclosed disciplinary reasons.
We have a Bryce English sighting in Denton. The former DeSoto star and Kansas State transfer has returned to the practice field after a season spent dealing various foot issues. English worked in on Saturday on the defensive line. Ulaiasi Tauaalo and LaDarius Hamilton are impressing on the defensive front as well.
Freshman Dayton LeBlanc will get a look as well up front, he's played well in the first few days of camp. Hopefully English can stay healthy and contribute this season.
The Mean Green will take Monday off.
Rice coach Mike Bloomgren is anticipating Monday's scrimmage will have effects on the team's two-deep. "Tomorrow we have a scrimmage and that's going to move the depth chart up and down. It's all on them to determine which way they want to go. That's the really cool thing about it being a meritocracy."
The Owls are further along, nine practices, than the rest of the teams in the area because they kick off against Prairie View on August 25th.
New coach Sonny Dykes dealt with a lot of injuries in spring football, so he's using the first few days to get acclimated to some of those previously injured players.
West Virginia transfer Reggie Roberson is running with the ones. He received a waiver from the NCAA and the former Mesquite Horn product is eligible for the 2018 season.
Off the field Dykes is encouraged by the renovations to the coaches' offices and locker room as well as the construction of the indoor facility. The work shows a commitment to the program by the University.
Tom Herman and Texas are having fun. This coincides with the Horns putting on shells for the first time. Sundays practice was the most fun Herman's had since arriving in Austin according to the second year coach.
Herman praised Texas' effort and said that both sides of the ball had success. Herman is excited about his running backs, he credits recruiting for the development. Tackle is a four man race between Calvin Anderson, Denzel Okafor, Derek Kerstetter, and redshirt freshman Sam Cosmi. Cosmi is also getting a look at guard.
Monday is a day off for the Longhorns.
At A&M quarterbacks Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel are alternating first team snaps day by day. Starkel took first team reps on Friday, Mond followed on Saturday and so on.
The Aggies are moving their offensive line around, All-SEC center Erik McCoy is moving to guard and guard Colton Prater is moving to center. According to McCoy, Prater has the intelligence to make all the necessary line calls. For McCoy's part, he's played guard during his time in Aggieland.
At TCU's media day earlier this weekend Gary Patterson disclosed that the quarterback race that we all thought was settled between Shawn Robinson and Michael Collins is anything but. The two will split time this fall. Whether Patterson is just blustering, as he's prone to do, is anyone's guess, but our guess is the Robinson starts the opener.
Collins transferred in from Penn this offseason.
