Making it to the NFL is rare, twins making it to the league is like having your lottery ticket shot into your pocket by lightning, but that's just was Keith, and Kerry Cash did. It's their birthday today.
As high school athletes, Keith and Kerry led San Antonio Holmes to the 5A state semi-finals in football in 1985 and the 5A Texas state championship game in basketball in 1987. Keith excelled in track and field as well, winning the district championship in the 200 meters and the high jump in 1987.
After Holmes, the Cash brothers signed with Texas, along with Holmes teammate Johnny Walker. At Texas Keith played wide receiver and Kerry tight end. Keith is best remembered at UT for catching the game-winning touchdown pass on 4th down to beat Oklahoma 14-13 in 1990. Kerry caught four touchdown passes in 1990, helping the Horns get to the SWC title and birth in the Cotton Bowl.
We won't talk about the 1991 Cotton Bowl against Miami, we come to praise the Cash brothers not depress them.
Kerry finished at Texas with 71 receptions and ten touchdowns. Keith made 56 catches for the Horns with thirteen touchdowns.
After their collegiate careers both went on to the NFL where each played six years. Kerry for the Colts, Raiders, and Bears; Keith for the Steelers and Chiefs.
Happy Birthday to the Cash brothers. Smear cupcake icing on each other or something.
