The news out of SMU is coming hot and heavy from party decks to a little roster shuffling. Now comes news that former Carrolton Creekview prospect and Kansas Jayhawk Larry Hughes is coming home to Dallas. Carry on my wayward son.
Hughes is a giant humanoid at 6-7, 310 pounds. He was set to go the JUCO route out of Creekview when Kansas made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Bang, Hughes started nine games as a true freshman. In 2016 the tackle moved inside to guard and started five games. Last season he started a couple of times. Remember that one time Kansas took a stand and refused to shake Baker Mayfield's hand? Then Mayfield grabbed his junk in their general direction? Hughes was in live fire that evening.
Kansas, in spite of its use of Hughes, viewed him as a project. His frame, though massive, needed to add strength. Hughes also needed to develop athletically. A telltale sign of that issue was the move inside in 2016. Hughes has the wingspan to play tackle, but if there's an Achilles heel, it's his ability to move. Still, he's an effort guy and should bring depth to SMU's offensive line which finished the spring with just seven healthy options.
