Last August, UTSA announced plans for the Roadrunner Athletics Center for Excellence or RACE. Thursday Athletic DIrector Dr. Lisa Campos firmed up November as the scheduled groundbreaking for the center.
The center will house offices, sports medicine, a weight room, research labs, and stand adjacent to a covered practice field. Note the distinction, like UAB, UTSA will have a covered practice facility, not an indoor facility. Plans include several other practice fields. The entire project will cost $44 million, and payment is coming via donations and a $10 million gift from the City of San Antonio. The cost of the covered area is just over $6 million, and the RACE comes in at $2.1 million.
Here’s a rendering of the facility:
UTSA joins a mini Roundup arms race with North Texas and SMUcompleting an indoor facility and Rice adding a bubble by the start of fall camp. UTSA’s facility is slated for finish by September of 2020. These developments leave only UTEP and Texas State without plans for or an existing practice facility away from the elements.
