Happy Birthday to Edd, double DD, Hargett!
A graduate of Linden-Kildare, where he was an All-American and All-State performer, Hargett played three years at Texas A&M, passing for 5,379 yards, a school record at the time. Kevin Murray, now known as Kyler’s dad, broke Hargett’s record in 1986. Hargett’s claim to fame was leading the 1967 Aggies to a SWC title and a Cotton Bowl win over Alabama and Bear Bryant. The ‘68 Cotton Bowl was A&M first since 1941.
That Aggie team lost four-straight to start the season before winning their final seven games. Hargett’s 2,321 passing yards in 1968 were sixth most in the NCAA. Vince Lombardi said Hargett was one of the most gifted passers he’d seen but knew he was doomed when the Saints drafted him in the 16th round of the 1969 NFL Draft.
Hargett never enjoyed success in the NFL, but he played four seasons in New Orleans and wrapped up his career with the Oilers.
Have yourself a day Double D Edd!
