Rice rarely has off the field issues; their players tend to exemplify the term “student-athlete.” On Friday the Owls took a rare action and suspended receiver Aaron Cephus due to a violation of team policies. Cephus led the Owls in touchdown catches in 2018 with five, I think all of them were on back-shoulder throws.
Cephus finished third on the team in receptions with 40 last season after leading all Owl receivers with a whopping 25 in 2017. A junior from Spring DeKaney won the George R. Brown Award that season as the Owl’s top receiver.
The Owls are serious, they’ve removed Cephus from the roster and appear intent on moving on without him. The burden of the receiving corps now falls on Austin Trammell, Cameron Montgomery, and newcomers Brad Rozner, and Zane Kipe. Cephus gave Rice a big, physical target, perhaps Rozner can fill that void to some degree after transferring in from Cisco Junior College.
Rice opens their season, Friday, August 30th at Army.
