It’s only a few days in but Nevada transfer and Midland native McLane Mannix is making an impression on Tech coaches. Mannix caught 107 balls for the Wolfpack the last two seasons and earned Freshman All-American status.
Another transfer’ Cal’s Evan Rambo is embracing a new position as DC Keith Patterson tabbed Rambo for the “Spur” role on the Red Raider defense. The “Spur” is a hybrid linebacker/safety in Patterson’s scheme. Rambo played a reserve role at Cal before a knee injury cost him the better part of two seasons.
Bob Stitt spoke at Media Day on Monday and discussed the quarterback competition. Currently, the ‘Cats are working in four quarterbacks with equal reps and a newcomer, freshman Cedric Case, is impressing the veteran offensive coordinator.
Case, from Lincoln, Nebraska, threw for 8,020 yards as a prep player and chose the Bobcats after de-committing from North Dakota.
Stitt believes his offense is more competitive against the veteran Bobcat defense and closing the gap every day. According to Stitt, the defense dominated the offense in the spring, but he’s seeing more back and forth so far in fall camp.
A&M was in full pads on Monday for the first time, Jimbo didn’t like the Aggies’ inconsistency between the offense and defense. He chalks that up to a lack of urgency and discipline.
Fisher is very high on Jashaun Corbin, the sophomore from Rockledge, Florida. Corbin is helping all over the field, including special teams. Fisher knows he’s got the right guy because he doesn’t have to “teach him how to run.” If Fisher has to coach a running back on how to run, he “recruited the wrong guy.”
SMU head coach Sonny Dykes is concerned about his team’s conditioning. “Our conditioning has to get better. We’re not in great shape right now. We’re going to have to practice ourself into shape. I was a little disappointed in a couple guys in that regard.”
One area Dykes isn’t concerned with is his new quarterback, Texas transfer Shane Buechele. He likes Buechele’s demeanor and the fact that he’s gone through this process before.
