Arkansas and Rice to renew Hostilities

Old SWC foes Rice and Arkansas will meet once again on the field in 2021. The Owls will travel to Fayetville to open the 2021 schedule replacing the Owls previously scheduled opener against Okie State. The Hogs won sixteen of the previous eighteen meetings. The two last met in 1991 before Arkansas left the league for the SEC.

The two met in some epic showdowns in the years since the series started in 1917. In 1946 the 5th ranked Owls lost to the Razorbacks in Little Rock, costing Rice a chance at a conference title and Cotton Bowl birth. In 1960 the 10th ranked Owls fell to the 16th ranked Razorbacks 3-0 to help send Arkansas to the ‘61 Cotton Bowl.

In 1937, unranked Rice knocked off the 16th ranked Hogs 26-20 to help send Jimmy Kits squad to their first-ever Cotton Bowl. Owl quarterback Ernie Lain threw a touchdown pass to Ollie Cordill with 33 seconds to play to give Rice the winning edge and place them atop the conference standings.

The last Rice win in the series came in Fayetteville when Trevor Cobb carried the rock 39 times for 153 yards to lift Fred Goldsmith’s Owls to a 19-11 victory.
